LHASA, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Tibet experts will launch an investigation into the geological evidence from the strongest quake in China's history records, the regional government told Xinhua Friday.

    The remains to be investigated had been well-preserved as it is in a remote village named Zhibai, in southeast Tibet's Mainling County, 80 kilometers from the epicenter, and the villagers moved away after the quake, said Zhu Quan, director of the regional earthquake bureau.

    The quake triggered an avalanche and blocked the Brahmaputra River, which formed a quake lake flooding the village and driving villagers to higher ground, Yong Shangrong, deputy head of Mainling county said.

    The quake of 8.6 magnitude hit Zayul County and Metok County on August 15, 1950. Landslides, avalanches, mud-rock flow killing 1,800 people in China and another 1,500 in India.

    The first expedition that took place from 1985 to 1986, led by the national authorities, had been limited by the extreme environment and backward scientific facilities, Zhu said.

    This expedition, the second in China's history, will tell the scientists more about the movements of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and make the place a tourism spot in the future, Zhu said.
