QINGDAO, East China, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- The first final berth of men's badminton team tournament went to Jiangsu at the 11th National Games here on Sunday.
Jiangsu, men's team defending champion, meeting almost no challenge from Guangdong, runner-up at last Games, wrapped up the victory of 3-0.
Li Yu of Jiangsu defeated Wang Zhengming of Guangdong in two straight sets 21-14, 21-15.
"Though Wang is younger than me, I still tried to challenge him no matter physically or mentally." Li explained his win.
First doubles match between Cai Yun-Xu Chen and Fu Haifeng-Zhu Lihua was highlighted as Cai and Fu are a golden pair in the Chinese national team. The duo ended the drought in 2006 that China has never won a men's doubles world title since 1989 and lifted the title again in 2009.
The fist set proved to be a tough one as Cai and Xu notched up the game 21-19. However in the second, Cai and Xu led the way and never looked back to secure a 21-12 victory, putting Jiangsu 2-0 ahead.
"I am so familiar with Fu. Whoever will win depends on his form," said Cai." Since Fu, Xu and I are all national shuttlers, our strategy is to play against Zhu. We won the first set thanks to some good luck but in the second, we are better in terms of overall strength."
Xu added: "Fu is good at backcourt play so we tried to play a frontcourt match and dominate the net."
Fu was satisfied with their performance. "I thought Zhu and I cannot cooperate well but actually we did a good job. Cai and Xu are clearly better than us so we just tried to play our best."
Chen Jin, world No. 4, wrapped up Jiangsu's 3-0 victory by frustrating Zhu Pengxiang 21-15, 21-15.
"I had no pressure as we have won the first two matches," said Chen. "We might meet Fujian in the final. We have to make solid preparation for that as they are balanced both in singles and doubles."
