Short-term Class for Foreign Learners Applicants to study in China are on the rise with the development of Sino-foreign cultural and educational exchanges. And accordingly the contents of short-term classes have developed from the originally solely Chinese language into literature, calligraphy, economics, architecture, law, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, arts, and sports. Law Study Class The law study class offers courses on China's Constitution, civil laws, economic laws, and laws and regulations on Sino-foreign joint investment, and organizes visits to law firms, court trial auditing, and discussions with law workers. Calligraphy and Painting Class The calligraphy and painting class mainly focuses on theories and skills of Chinese calligraphy and traditional Chinese paintings, including mountain-and-water paintings, flower-and-bird paintings, and figure paintings. Ancient Architecture Class The ancient architecture class offers lectures on the history of architectural development in ancient China, and on ancient China's architectural engineering technology. Students can also visit ancient Chinese buildings and gardens characteristic of various styles and times. Cooking Class The cooking class focuses on the characteristics and cooking skills of major Chinese cuisines, with every student having the opportunity to make a dish independently. Sports Training Class The sports training class focuses on traditional Chinese martial arts, qigong(a kind of Chinese traditional healing art), and modern sports items. But different classes can give particular priority to different items. Preparatory Education on the Chinese Language for International Students in China Chinese is the major teaching language for International students in Chinese universities. Books, periodicals, and reference materials in university libraries and archives are mostly in Chinese. Therefore, international students have to have a command of Chinese to a certain level in order to finish their studies smoothly. Undergraduate, Master Degree, or Ph.D students and Visiting students (those enrolled at other universities) who didn't learn Chinese, or whose Chinese proficiency doesn't meet the needs of subject studies before coming to China, have to learn basic Chinese for one or two school years upon arrival. Visiting students and graduate students who are taught directly in foreign languages still need to pick up some Chinese for the convenience of daily life and study.
