Foreign students’ education in new China has begun in 1950. Now about 41,000 foreign students study in China’s universities and they come from about 125 countries in the world. The foreign students study in China can be divided as language students, undergraduates, master degree students, doctoral degree students, general visiting students, senior visiting students, researchers and all kinds of short-term overseas students.
To different foreign students, China’s universities have different teaching methods.
College students: According to the teaching plan of Chinese college students, the duration is 2-3 years. Foreign students have the same courses like Chinese students in the same class. They will be awarded the diploma after passing the examination.
Language students: Students who study language in China with high school degree. The duration is 1-2 years. They will be awarded certificate of language education after study.
Undergraduates: According to the teaching plan and schooling length of undergraduates in China, the duration is 4-5 years. Foreign students have course with Chinese students. According to the different situation, some optional courses can be reduced for foreign students or set separate classes for them. They will be awarded bachelor degree after completing graduation paper and passing the examination.
Master degree students: According to the teaching plan and schooling length of master degree students in China, the duration is 2-3 years.
Doctoral students: According to the teaching plan and schooling length of doctoral degree students in China, the duration is 3 years. Under the help of supervisor, the foreign students should finish courses, examination, doctoral dissertation and thesis defense. Then they will be awarded doctoral degree.
General visiting students: According to the major they have learnt, foreign students have courses with Chinese students in the same class or they have separate courses. The duration is 1-2 years. They will be awarded certificate of education after passing the examination.
Senior visiting students: According to research project, foreign students will be arranged a supervisor for each of them. Under the help and arrangement of university, students complete social investigations and visiting. The duration is 1-2 years. They will be awarded the certificate of education after complete study plan.
Researchers: According to the research project, the scholars will be arranged a teacher for each one of them. Base on scholars’ research project, the teacher will help them complete social investigations and visiting concerned with their projects. The length of research time depends on the project.
China’s universities encourage students all over the world to study doctoral and master degree in China. And we also welcome them come to China for further study after graduation in China. Therefore, many universities in China set English teaching courses for foreign students.
