Choosing which university or college to go to can be a life-changing decision. Do as much research as possible so that you choose the right university for the right reasons.

University location
There are lots of Chinese universities and colleges to choose from, so think about where you'll be love to be everyday of your studying period. Would you like to live in a large, busy city or a quieter, smaller town? Think about what you want - each place will offer something different.

University rankings
Before deciding on a University, also consider the University rating. These are useful making choices between universities because they explain how well that University is doing in comparison to others. However, please note that these do not give information at course and department level. It is also important to remember that attending a University at the top of the league table does not imply that higher grades will be achieved. This will be the responsibility of the student studying at the University. A high placing does mean that generally facilities and grades are above the average compared to other Universities. This can also be important in terms of your career as some blue-chip companies have a preference of students from some specific Universities.

Accommodation and living cost
Many universities and colleges in China offer dormitories, apartments or international student hotels to students who want to live in. Depends on location and room type, accommodation fee can vary from RMB900 to RMB5000 per month. In general, accommodation fee is higher in major cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, etc.

The cost of living in China is much lower than in western countries although certain aspects of life in its major cities can be comparable. If you care about your finance condition, make research of the cost of living in China before deciding on which university to attend is necessary.

Other suggestions
  • Visit the university websites and read about your courses, the city/town and the social life.
  • You can’t choose a university without considering the course it offers, so narrow down your search by finding which universities offer the course you wish to apply for.
  • Speak to students who already study there or read an alternative guide

Whatever your criteria, research the institution and its location before applying. Speak to friends, family, advisers and the institution itself for advice, but make sure the final decision is yours.
