Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is located in the northwest of Lijiang. It runs from the south to the north about 35 kilometers, and it is about 13 kilometers wide from east to the west. It covers a total area of 396 square kilometers, and stands against the Haba Snow Mountain with surging Jingsha River runs past.
It is famous for its high hills and meadows, snowy mountains and water and primitive forests. The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is the highest peak in ranges of Yunlong Mountains. The glaciers originating from these mountains have the lowest latitude in the Northern Hemisphere.
The 13 peaks, which have the altitudes of at least 4,000 meters, are covered by snow all year round; the mountain is called the "Natural Glacier Museum" for it has all types of glacier. Hiking trails exist and are highly recommended, but the majority of visitors avail themselves of three chairlift lines that provide access to the retreating glacier and three designated scenic spots: Dry Sea Meadow (Ganhaizi), Cloud Fir Meadow and Yak Meadow (Maoniuping), which features breathtaking views and access to a number of trails.
History
According to the geologists' research, for about 400 million years the area around Jade Dragon Snow Mountain was the ocean and it was during the last 600 thousand years that the different landscapes had come into being because of the uprising of the lithosphere.
Dry Sea Meadow (Ganhaizi)
It is a vast meadow which is located to the east of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, with a length of more than 4 kilometers. Being for its wideness and openness, it is one of the best locations to see the whole mountain. There are many beautiful flowers and plants are growing on the meadow.
Cloud Fir Meadow (Yunshanping)
It covers an area of 0.5 square meters. It is the most romantic and magic spot in the mountain. It is said that if the young lovers die fro love at this place, their souls would go to the heaven. The mountain in this area is like a great mirror, and full of trees and animals.
Forest of Ice Tower (Bingtlin)
On the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, there are numerous marine glaciers, which is the nearest from the Equator on the Eurasian Continent. In theis area, tthear are about 19 modern glaciers, with a total area of more than 11.61 square kilometers. And they are also the most valuable ones among glaciers in the world.
