Nanjing University, one of China's key comprehensive universities under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education, dates from 1902 when it was known as Sanjiang Normal School. During the following decades, it evolved as Liangjiang Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University, the Fourth Zhongshan University, and National Central University. On August 8, 1949, National Central University was renamed National Nanjing University.
Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics was established in October, 1952. It is located in Nanjing, the ancient capital of six dynasties. Minggugong Campus is situated on the remains of the ancient Ming Palace, and Jiangjunlu Campus is situated in Jiangning Economic and Technological Development Zone, covering an area of more than 460 acres with a building area of 856, 000 square meters.
The history of Nanjing Normal Universitycan be traced back to Sanjiang Normal School established in 1902. It was since then operated under a series of names including Liangjiang Excellent Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, Southeast University, Central University, and Nanjing University. Another source came from Huiwen institute set up in 1888, which developed into the private Jinling University. In 1952 when the Chinese institutions of higher learning underwent a nationwide reorganization, Nanjing Teachers’ College came into being with departments from Nanjing University, Jinling University and a number of other institutions. It became Nanjing Normal University in January, 1984.
The origin of Nanjing Forestry University (NFU) can be traced back to 1902, when it was founded as Sanjiang Normal College. Then, it evolved as: Forest Departments of Jinling University (founded in 1888) and Central University (in 1902). During the nationwide restructuring of institutions of higher learning in 1952, the university was called Nanjing Forestry College combined with different forest departments from Wuhan University, Nanchang University and Hubei Agricultural College. NFU was also named Nanjing Technological College of Forest Products in 1972. Again in 1983 NFU resumed its name as Nanjing Technological College of Forest Products. 1985 witnessed the founding of Nanjing Forestry University.
Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded in October 15th, 1954. Its original name is Jiangsu Continuation School of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Then it was added an extension by Jiangsu School of Traditional Chinese Medicine to be the Nanjing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 1995, it renamed Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine approved by the Ministry of Education of China. It is one of the earliest colleges of its kind founded in China.
