Embroidery, also known as silk embroidery, is commonly referred to as “xiu hua”. With a long history, Chinese embroidery was in the same important position as Cotton poplin and K’o-ssu (silk tapestry with cut designs) in the history of Chinese craft art.
The difference is that Cotton poplin and K’o-ssu are textiles by knitting color, while embroidery is textile by spurring color. The three kinds of craft art were outstanding contributions of the labor women of our country in cultural and artistic aspects.
The four representative embroideries of China are Suzhou embroidery, Hunan embroidery, Guangdong embroidery and Sichuan embroidery.
Suzhou Embroidery
Suzhou embroidery, with 2000 years of history, has well known as being fine, simple but elegant since ancient times. Its composition is simple, and its theme is prominent. Therefore, its technique features are summarized as being flat, tidy, fine, dense, even, smooth, soft and light. Double-sided embroidery is to embroidery patterns on both sides of the embroidery, the images and stitches on which are the same, with the pin hidden. Since Panama International Exposition in 1915, Suzhou embroidery works has won great reputation from home and abroad.
Hunan Embroidery
Hunan embroidery, founded in the state of Chu, became a major hand craft in urban and rural areas of Changsha during the Qing Dynasty. On the basis of Hunan folk embroidery, it had developed by absorbing the advantages of Suzhou embroidery and Guangzhou embroidery. Patterns of Hunan embroidery draw on the strengths of Chinese Painting, the subjects of which are mainly landscape, characters, flowers, birds, animals, especially the embroidered lions and tigers. The embroidered tiger, with strong and hard wool, is fully demonstrated the power and might of the king of the beasts. On the Exposition in Turin, Italy, in 1912 and the Exposition of All Nations in Panama, in 1933, Hunan embroidery won the Optimal Award and the First Prize respectively, hailed as super embroidery abroad.
Guangdong Embroidery
Guangdong embroidery, which is the embroidery produced in the Guangdong, according to legend, was originally founded in ethnic minorities – Li. There is a unique phenomenon in Guangdong embroidery is that embroidery workers are mostly men and they are often embroidering, standing and using long needles. The works includes big decorations such as high Mirror-screens, or hanging screens, and tiny goods such as Pocket, clothing decorations, fans and fan coats. Most Guangdong embroidery exists in the collection of the National Palace Museum.
Sichuan Embroidery
Sichuan embroidery, also known as chuan embroidery, is the collection of embroidery centering on Chengdu, Sichuan which is produced in some cities of Sichuan, such as Chengdu and Mianyang. With its unique skills of stitch, Su embroidery has strong expressive and artistic effects. Originated from the folk of western province of Sichuan, due to the effect of the geographical environment, customs, arts and culture, Su embroidery has gradually developed into a unique style that is rigorous and exquisite, light and flat, smooth and clear, vigorous and round, light and lively.
