I've taught in Kunming for just over a year now and in that short (but illuminating) period ive managed to put together a fairly open minded, un biased opinion of the place. Sure China is a place of contrasts…well actually, to begin with it feels like the binary opposite of everything us westerners might take for granted…I mean who eats fruit pizzas or vegetable ice cream ?…but !…the place makes up for the warped aspects in its sheer charm…by comparison to Beijing, and the bigger cities of China, Kunming manages to have a fairly fast-paced and westernised atmosphere whilst not having indulged in some of the darker and less attractive aspects of most western cities, the drugs are reletively few and far between (although the sheer volume of doped up yanks is quite staggering ;o) and the prostitution is curbed to a healthy minimum. Is that good or bad youre asking ?…ha! The people are relatively polite - sure, they'll hack out their flem-filled throats right in front of you but they’ll smile and happily invite you to sit and chat if you can manage even the most basic chinese. As for schools in Kunming, well, they seem a fairly mixed bag… look, you gotta come to china with an adapted philosophy about this whole thing…in China, education is business (sure, that’s a universal point) but in China, its serious money and therefore, as a dumb and na?ve foreigner, it can seem a little crass at times just how much emphasis is given to the subject of the folding matter. Deal with it…its how it is. Schools here (and really im talking about the fat cat private system) will do anything to cut corners, refusal to invest in materials and resources and yeah, that gets really f-ckin tiresome very quickly so it’s a hard path if you choose the private direction…the plus side is by and by, they pay quite a bit more than the public system so…do you take the money and run or do you stick with what you know to be right and true and go public ?…that’s your choice !
OK so that’s a basic impression of teaching in China… (hope it helps)
