How many of you go on a trip 1-2 weeks / year ? I suppose not many , but when you do , i am almost convinced that you plan your trip in great details and decide how much and what to take with you , especially those nifty little gadgets that us , men , love so much . So , i will just get started with every mans dream , and top 10 things you should pack with you :
1) BGAN Nera Worldpro
Well , you’ll certainly need an internet connection if you’re a web savvy like most people nowadays are , you don’t need to spend all your time in front of the computer browsing the internet you’re in vacation for god sakes , but you can just leave your computer to download some quality music . while you’re on the beach , for you and your lady .. to listen when you get back . And the greatest thing about this nifty little device it’s that it weights only 2.2 pounds and moreover you get satellite phone services as well , all of these for the mere price of 2,500$ isn’t this just a dream ?
2) No Joke Water Purification
Hmm .. imagine this , walking on the beach and on a tropical island you adventure with your girl in the deep forests and come across a nice flowing cold watered river .. but you’re afraid that the water could have some germs .. this is where SteriPEN [pictured], which uses ultraviolet light, and the MIOX Purifier from Mountain Safety Research, which uses a “dose of mixed oxidants” to do their un-dirtying work come in action. The SteriPEN Traveler is available for 130$ and the MIOX is a bit more expensive , available at 140$
3) All-in-One Power Plug Adapter
You pack all of your gadgets with you , and you think .. well , these gadgets need more plugs and power supplies and moreover , not all of your gadgets work at a normal voltage which is supplied by the power supply in your hotel room , so , you’ll need a plug-adapter . Yeah , no respected ( and normal guy ) would want to get all of his toys fried because of a stupid plug , right ? So , be smart and be predictive , so you’ll get the most for your 15$ . Spend wisely .
4) Voltaic Solar Backpack
Remember that adventure i was talking to you about , with your girl in the forest ? Well , you might need some gadgets with you as well , some cameras or some mp3 players to listen to some music when you’re sitting near that river and purifying the water .. SO you will need a power source to have with you , that’s where Voltaic bags come in , at a 250$ a pop you can have almost every kind of plugs you’ll need for your trip .
One thing that sets the Voltaic bags apart from other solar bags is the included rechargeable battery. While you can take power right off of the panels if you choose. Even better, the battery can be charged off of a wall jack, meaning you can use the bag as as universal charger.
5) Multi-tool
Having a multi-tool with you wherever you go might save you of a lot of headaches . Whatever brand you choose to go with—Victorinox also makes a few models—just don’t go crazy and buy the most expensive one you can find. Even the best multi-tools are a collection of mediocre tools made worthwhile because of their convenience; as long as you’ve got a good knife, a saw blade, a file, and some scissors you’ll be fine. But if you drop more than 50 bucks on a multi-tool, you’re going to be spasmodic when you inevitably drop it off a cliff.
6) National Geographic Talk Abroad Travel Phone
Well , the name says most of it .. you could get lost or you could have no signal coverage and something bad ( god forbid ) happens while you’re in the forests with your girl .. and you need to signal all of your other group members , so , you’ll just have to be in love with the “work everywhere” Nokia GSM cellphone . Although it has a pretty expensive per minute rate and a monochrome screen , this baby is worth all the money .
7) LightCap Solar-Powered LED Light and Water Bottle
It’s actually made out of 2 devices built in a single one : a lightcap and a bottle which you can fill with water while you’re at it . It may not seem like a great thing , but it can make a great tent iluminator or can help you read at night if you’re a book savvy . And for the small price of 25$ you can get it .
8)Suunto Clipon Watchband Compass
Really, any decent compass will do—as long as you take it with you. This model from Suunto is only $10 and clips right onto your watch band, which may not be the most dapper place for a compass to hide, but what price True North?
9) Portable Surge protector
Once again I’ve suggested a Kensington model and once again I don’t really care which one you buy. But one of these $15 surge protectors can be the difference between a happy, productive adventure and a multi-day side quest to find a sub-Saharan Genius Bar.
10) Apple AirPort Express
Well , we’ve discussed about internet in your hotel room , but what about at the airport ? And at the price of 100$ it’s more expensive than similar travel-sized Wi-Fi hubs so unless you think you’ll use the iTunes streaming function don’t be afraid to consider other options.
But get something. Not only does adding Wi-Fi to your hotel room internet allow you to work anywhere in your room, it makes it infinitely easier to share your expensive 24 hours of connectivity with your fellow travelers. My AirPort Express has gotten a room full of cranky trade show reporters online more times than I would have ever imagined.
