ASU CI hosted a professional teacher workshop by Dr. Shuhan wang, deputy director for the National Foreign Language Center (NFLC) at the University of Maryland. She is also co-principal investigator of STARTALK Project, a multiyear federally funded initiative that promotes the study and teaching of critical languages in the United States.
The title of the workshop is "Developing Standards-based and Culture/Content-Rich Curricular Themes for Chinese Learners". In this workshop, Dr. Wang first discussed a conceptual framework that incorporates standards, culture, and content. She shareed her views about how to translate the 5Cs into curriculum and instruction while facilitating the discussion of what a culture- and content-rich curricular theme looks like for a Chinese classroom. Participants had an opportunity to go through the steps of developing such themes. At the end of the workshop, participants were able to explain what a standards-based and culture/content-rich curricular theme is, identify essential elements of such a theme, and go through the steps in developing other curricular themes for Chinese language learners
