A batch of British students studied in China gathered at Education department of China Embassy on mid-autumn day, sharing their memories of studying in China in Chinese on “Unforgettable my mother school in China” seminar.
Among them there were older predecessors who came to China in 1962 and promising young people that just returned after having studied in China. Their proficient Chinese and being acquainted with Chinese culture shows that they were the representatives of thousand British students studying in China. What they have in common in their life is that studying in China help they grow up to be elites in their work, they made people vote for them in British Culture Committee, The British Library, British Association of Chinese Fans, China-Britain Business Council, HSBC, Universities like Oxford.
The stories of Haizhen Tong who spoke on the seminar was comparatively typical one. She was studying Chinese language and culture in Renmin University of China during 1900 to 1991, and worked in Beijing from 1995to 1997.
Haizhen Tong told the applicants: ”I never thought that China would be so important a nation in 2010 when I made the decision to study Chinese language 20 years ago, my parents and friends was very surprised about my decision:’ Why do you want to learn Chinese, What do China do with us?’ When I was in my middle school, I saw nothing about China in our history, geography, literature and so on as well as in syllabus. On my 15th I want to Hong Kong and China for holiday, I thought when I was in Hong Kong then, there were people of long history and culture and interest on the other side. it was my first that I have been in a foreign country, I didn’t understand what I saw and what I heard, so I felt annoyed. I wanted to know what China is like, what the people think and what their future will be.”
Recent years, British people coming to study in China increased; the statistics says that there are over 3000 British people studying in China universities.
When taking about study abroad experience, Sizhe Jiang thought that to learn Chinese well a British man should have these two: one is that he need generally know Chinese language and culture, and the second is that he should go to China and take those in to practice, just like double wings of a bird. He hopes that more British people go to China and find the China dream.
