Chinese brushmaking demonstration and workshop was held in the Confucius Institute at Webster Universityon September12th, 2013. This workshop was organized by the Confucius Institute at Webster University, Missouri Arts Council, Regional arts commission and Department of Art Design and Art History at Webster University.

There are two classes of the demonstration and workshop, and the teacher is Ying Zhou who is a brush making and pottery artist from Jingde, China. The students from LeighGerdine College of Fine Arts and the artists from Art Museum of St.Louisjoined this demonstration and workshop.

In the demonstration class the teacher showed how to make a Chinese brush, and the students listened carefully, some of them even took a note. Then the students started to make a Chinese brush by themselves under the teacher’s instruction. One of the artist said:“I studied calligraphy with a volunteer teacher of Confucius Institute at Webster University, it is a good chance to know how to make a Chinese brush, how can I miss it?”

The students and the artists had a better understanding of the Chinese calligraphy through the demonstration, especiallythe process of making a Chinese brush by themselves. During the period, the Missouri Arts Council and the Regional Arts Commission had a better understanding of Confucius Institute at Webster University. What is more, the cooperation betweenConfucius Institute and the local commission will good forthe Sino-US cultural exchanges.
