In Lambeth Academy, London, a Confucius Classroom attaching great importance to the Chinese, there are rapid growth of Chinese teaching and vigorous development of hub school. From this year, we have opened a unique club, Chinese Corner, after school, aiming to introduce Chinese culture, to enhance students' interest in learning Chinese, and to improve their Chinese language proficiency. At present, the Chinese Corner has been the favor of the students with the support of the school and parents.

There are a great variety of activities in the Chinese Corner such as playing Chinese shuttlecock, reading Chinese books, writing Chinese calligraphy, and painting Chinese masks and so on. All are loved by the students because the activities can help them to understand the charm of Chinese culture. We have interspersed Chinese knowledge in each activity to improve their Chinese language proficiency. For example, when the students are reading cultural books sent by Hanban, they are engaged in thinking and asking questions, understanding much more about Chinese history and cities. When they hear of the news that panda from China came to the UK, they draw the most beautiful pandas in their imagination with Chinese brushes, learning the words of body parts and color at the same time. When they are playing Chinese shuttlecocks, they are also learning to count. When they are practicing calligraphy, they get familiar with Chinese strokes and memorize Chinese characters as well. When they have learned how to write their own Chinese name with Chinese brushes, they are very happy and proud. In short, in every part of all activities, we have combined culture and language, interests and knowledge smoothly. Therefore, the Chinese Corner is greatly welcomed by the students. Not only the students’ Chinese language proficiency but also their interests in Chinese culture have been significantly improved.
