Every year around Chinese Spring Festival, Perth High School will hold a China Day in Assembly Hall. The whole leader group in the school focused on it important. The deputy principle teacher Mrs Keatings organized us to have a preparation meeting to make a plan for China Day. We decided to do Taiji, crafting, chopsticks competition, study Chinese, paper folding, paper cutting, wish tree, shuttlecock. They also supply fortune cookies, which all the students like it very much, and Chinese food at lunch time.
Before China Day, some posters were made to disseminate this activity. We let students do the survey about Chinese traditional festival and made a poster as well. From those activities, more and more students were interested in China Day and looking forward to its coming.
On 6th, Feb and 7th, China day was coming on its time. The whole Assembly Hall was decorated with kites, lanterns, dragons and best wishes in Chinese characters. It was full of harmonious and Chinese atmosphere. All S1 students are divided into 12 groups which is individually named by Chinese zodiac.
On that day, the students followed me to make water lily lanterns and paper cutting about lanterns. Traditionally, apart from enjoying the lanterns on Lantern Festival, Chinese people usually stand under the lantern to guess the lantern riddles. So I asked each students to use their imagination and creativity to make up their own riddles write down and let others guess. They did a good job. They were proud of themselves and had a lot of achievement when others couldn’t guess what it is and then they gave the answers like a teacher proudly. At first, I read their riddles in front of the whole group. Then they could organized others to be quiet and read by themselves. According to this activity, it increases the students’ confidence and also practices the ability of communication each other. Furthermore, we could see other groups were working hard for their work.
China Day let more and more students begin to know China, begin to love China, begin to study Chinese. In campus, we can often hear the students say “你好” to you and ask you about Chinese expressions and some questions about China. Although I was in faraway Scotland, I also feel the friendly from everyone as well as feeling my country.
