Rencetly, a news that “the president of Nanjing Normal University school of internaitonal culture education gave foreign students Chinese names” raised foreing students’ hot discussion. Lots of foreign students all posted their Chinese names online, teachers of teaching Chinese as foreign langauge posted mutifarious names they gave to the students.
Xiaocui Wang, Chinese language teacher said “Foreign students’ Chinese names were given by the teachers or by students themselves.
Besides that, not a few students were given Chinese name according to their personal interests. A foreign student from Nanjing University said “I like eating Chinese lamb shashlik, so I am called “lamb shashlik” by my classmates, we also found some other Chinese names such as “Angle”,“coxcomb”and so on.
Smith, an American student who graduated from Beijing Language and Culture University said the author that he was called “Bruce Li” in China. He said “Some of my friends named themselves Chinese names such as Fan Bingbing, Zhang Ziyi, Li Taibai and so on because they like famous stars or they are interested in Ancient Chinese Poems.”
According to statistics, till 2011, number of international students in China broke through 290,000; number of Chinese language students reached over 40 billion.
“I think Chinese language learner should have a Chinese name first for their study and life in China” said Beibei Zhang, a Chinese language voluntary teacher in Thailand. Chinese name can make teaching language as foreign language class’ phonetic teaching works more for less effort.
On the other hand, Chinese names also motivate foreign students to be more interned in Chinese language. Take the students called “lamb shashlik” for example, because he likes eating lamb shashlik, so he can start with how to make lamb shashlik to learn ingredients, producer and seasoning. Learning Chinese food with a Chinese name first, and then learning the history and culture of Chinese cuisine. So learning Chinese language became interesting exploration.
