JAKARTA, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- An international event on traditional puppet play, or Wayang in Indonesian terminology, was held here Sunday, bringing together puppet experts, puppet master and artists from Canada, Croatia, France, India, Kenya, Iran and China.

The two-day event themed "Weaving World's Cultural Cooperation Through Wayang", is held in the capital city's square park of Monas.

It is filled with programs aimed at introducing several kinds of Wayang play from across the world and promoting the good ethics and values contained in the stories of Wayang plays that can eventually be adopted by the people in their daily life.

Addressing the opening of the event on Saturday, Indonesia's Vice President Boediono said that besides providing good life philosophy, Wayang has a potential to provide economic benefit to the people. "Besides as the reference to develop our culture value, Indonesia's Wayang play has been inscribed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Educational Organization ( UNESCO) as one of the world's heritages in 2003. It potentially helps our creative economy development that would eventually prosper the people,"the vice president said.

According to Indonesian Deputy Minister of Education Wiendu Nuryanti, the 2012 Wayang event was originally initiated by Indonesian government with an aim to align vision and strategies to preserve puppet play as part of world's heritage.
