It was a wonderful day for Year 10 and Year 11 students from Djanogly City Academy, Nottingham, so was for the mandarin teachers. They brought not only Chinese language but also the culture activities into Northgate Primary School.

Since mandarin’s more and more popular in England nowadays, it won’t be very surprised to see Chinese activities take place in an English secondary school or a primary school. However, it is quite interesting and special for students from a higher level to teach mandarin and Chinese culture in a primary school.

These Year 10 and Year 11 students from Djanogly City Academy have been learning mandarin as their foreign language in school out of interest in a totally different culture. As a result, they all have a reserve of the language and the knowledge of the culture as well. They planned all different kinds of activities to get Northgate primary school’s children involved in.

Ready for action!

Students enjoyed introducing China and Chinese culture to Northgate’s primary students. Some students led activities on Chinese numbers (complete with a Sudoku Challenge!), chopstick challenges, getting dressed up in traditional Chinese outfits whilst the Confucius Classroom teachers helped give students Chinese names. Time passed quickly and was enjoyed by many people; a wonderful experience for all involved.

‘These are all my students from mandarin class. I’m quite impressed by what they did today!’ said Miss Jamieson, Djanogly City Academy.
