Mention Chinese philosophy, and many will think of Confucius. The great sage was also known as a great teacher. Just in time for Children’s Day, a drama named "Young Confucius" is being staged at the National Center for the Performing Arts. It aims to help children grasp the timeless truths of Confucianism through lively music and dance.

Even the greatest teachers start out as students. And Confucius was no exception.

A proper education meant mastering the six arts of Rites, Music, Archery, Charioteering, Calligraphy and Mathematics. That was the foundation for becoming a proper gentleman and member of society. It’s something easily understood today.

"What really attracted me was ’learning’ as the overarching theme of the show. I think my boy is old enough to take in all of this now." Audience member said.

The 3 acts of the show each portray a stage in the growth of the young Confucius. The producer wants to show how even as a boy, Confucius was already beginning to formulate and enact the values he would later advocate.

Zhao Yongzhuang, Producer of "Yong Confucius", said, "Through the vivid performances we want our audience to actually relate to Confucius and his values like charity, filial piety, tolerance and forgiveness, even for his rivals."

The rival comes in the form of Niu Hong. The son of a well off family is constantly competing with Confucius and trying to put him down. But the ending is not a head-to-head clash with one winner.Niu Hong is moved and transformed by the qualities of Confucius. The true victory is reconciliation. And that’s a lesson of harmony we could all learn.
