SHANGHAI, May 4 (Xinhua) -- DreamWorks Animation's first musical, "Shrek the Musical," will be staged in Shanghai this summer, the event's organizers announced on Friday.
As a typical Broadway-style musical, the play combines professional dancing, lighting and costume design and brings its audience into a "fairy world," according to Fei Yuanhong, program director at the Shanghai Cultural Plaza, where the musical will be staged.
"The play is quite different from other fairy tales and should be seen as a breakthrough," Fei said.
"Shrek the Musical," an adaption of the first entry in the "Shrek" film franchise, was composed by three-time Tony Award nominee Jeanine Tesori and scripted by Pulitzer Drama Award winner David Lindsay-Abaire, according to the company.
The musical will be staged from July 13 to Aug. 5, with the cheapest tickets priced at 80 yuan each (about 12.7 U.S. dollars).
Founded in 1994, DreamWorks Animation develops, produces and distributes films, video games and television programming.
The U.S. film studio and its Chinese partners signed an agreement in February this year to jointly run Oriental DreamWorks in China.
