According to the report of Voice of China-Global Chinese Broadcasting Cooperation Network (Chinese Radio Network reports in Sep. 6
th), many German students are currently picking up to
study abroad. In Germany, students are eager for such an opportunity to study in New York, Paris, London, Sydney, Beijing and Tokyo. Study abroad has been an edge tool for German students to find a better job in the future.
In the data of 2010, for example, universities in Austria have been the first choice that German students choose to study. Now about 2,700 students are studying here. Besides Austria and Switzerland, German students are keen on study in Spain, United States, Sweden and China. In 2005, there were about 2,000 German students
studying in China. This number had been increased to 5,400 in 2011. At present, nearly 6,000 German students are studying in China. This number is increasing every year. Equally, Chinese students are fond of studying in Germany and now about 25,000 students study in Germany.
The data also shows another interesting phenomenon that more German students study abroad choose to learn Arts than Engineering degree. In Germany, study abroad experience is not required for job hunting after graduation. However, it is clear that study abroad or internship have been an edge tool in the competitive job market. Some international companies point that study abroad experience can be competitive advantage in recruitment.
In recent years, Germany Academic Exchange Service Center has made extensive statistics and investigation on German students study abroad. It has found that the most common motive of German students study abroad is accumulation to job-hunting after graduation. Of course, some students study abroad is to seek adventure. It is very accord with students’ psychological characteristics. Even, someone study abroad just want to start a relationship.
Dominant programs in Germany, like Medicine and Psychology, are limited in recruitment. Students who graduate from their high school with non-ideal graduation score cannot be admitted in the dominant programs. So they try to study in some universities abroad without admission threshold. What’s more, they choose to study abroad because there are no programs they want to study in Germany universities, such as international logistics.
Economic programs in Germany are divided into national economy and business economic. Unlike, it has more specific classification in the universities of Europe and United States. Or some programs are very “unexpected”, like horse-keeping and agricultural economic. You can only study this program in the Netherlands. What’s more, some programs require students to get an internship in foreign countries, like Archeology and Japanology. For German college students, study abroad also should have certain economic strength, such as tuition fee, travelling expense and insurance, etc. But some of Germany and the European Union institutions offer loans and scholarship for students to study abroad.
