Canada’s Governor General David Johns visited China for one week from Oct.18. He expressed that this trip had double meanings: on the one hand, this trip was not only better for promoting the bilateral strategic partnership with China, but also promoted cooperation in economic field, technological field, and educational field. On the other hand, David Johns himself was really impressed by Chinese culture.
David Johns really pays more attention to Canada-China education when he was a president of university. In 1981, he visited China as the president of the McGill University and built the partnership with some Medical colleges in Beijing. When he was the president of University of Waterloo, he devoted himself to build the partnership with Nanjing University. Because of this, Nanjing University awarded the “Honorary Doctorate” to him. After this, University of Waterloo and Nanjing University have made many achievements in the research of the Arctic environment, globe warming, and getting through the Northwest Passage.
David Johns was really happy because of his three daughters who studied in China.
David Johns told the reporters that he has 5 daughters, three of them who had studied in China before. One of two eldest daughters had studied Chinese for two years in Beijing Language and Culture University. The other daughter had studied in Chinese University of Hong Kong for one year and had lived in Nanjing and Hangzhou during two summers. Another daughter had studied in Shanghai for 4 months. David Johns said,“My daughters are really attracted by Chinese Culture, and their experience of studying in China widened their horizon and let them know China’s long and rich history, so they all really like China now. When they returned from China, they got used to using chopsticks to eat at home.”
